Can you tell us about the creative process behind this collaboration? What inspired you, and how did the dialogue between your vision and VS's aesthetic develop?
Ha, Vanessa DM'd me—a modern approach for a modern woman! I immediately liked her: she's cool, funny, wears stylish T-shirts, and we mentioned the exact same fashion references. That's not common! I'm certainly not known for my swimwear expertise, but I've always loved resort wear, especially that classic, very fine '70s mix of khaki and leopard print. I wear both of those things all the time—and I'm always on the hunt for even cooler khaki, even chicer leopard. Vanessa gets that instinctively.
When you co-create or select pieces, what comes to mind first?
Emotion, silhouette, practicality, storytelling…?
I would say the silhouette and the confidence—the immediate confidence you get from a perfect, easy-to-wear piece. The one you come back to again and again.
How do you define timeless design? What makes a piece transcend fashion trends without aging?
An understanding of what good design is, and a determination to achieve it.
What is your favorite piece from the LB collection, and why?
There are two! The green linen shirt and the cargo pants. They're the perfect shade of green, and the linen is lightweight, with a nice flow. I'll be wearing these all summer—I'm literally packing them in my suitcase for Italy!
